With his charm and his smooth-talking skills, he woos Juliet. O, she dost teaches the torches to burn bright. Romeo finally snaps out his “breakup” (even though the feelings were never reciprocated) when he sees Juliet at the ball hosted by her family. Through these couple of scenes, Shakespeare shows Romeo as this insecure kid who really only trusts Benvolio and Mercutio. And I will make thee think thy swan a crow.” Yeah, we’re gonna need some ice for that burn. Benvolio even says on page 33, “Compare her face with some that I shall show. Benvolio tries cheering him up with the good ol’ adage that there’s plenty of fish out in the sea. BTW he’s actually a pretty sensitive guy. Romeo is torn and so blinded by his love for Rosaline. Here’s my breakdown on Romeo in Act 1: lovesick, broken-hearted, lover boy. Borrow Cupid’s wings, and soar with them above a common bound.” ~Mercutio to Romeo What is it else? A madness most discreet, A choking gall, and a preserving sweet.” ~Romeo Montague p.23 “You are a lover. Character Analysis “Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs Being purged, a fire sparkling in lover’s eyes Being vexed, a sea nourished with loving tears. As I pay closer attention to all these different interactions happening at the same time, I’m getting different sides to the story and I think that’s what I really like about plays. There’s so many plot lines building off this one huge plot line that makes the play what it is. At times, it can be overwhelming, but I think I’m getting better at it. Maybe it just me, but it’s kind of confusing with all the setting transitions and when new characters are introduced. Something that I find kind of challenging with the play, and just plays in general, is tracking the characters in the setting.

It’s just really cool because with each new scene, I’m seeing a lot of inspiration movies, tv shows, and parodies have used from Shakespeare. And so far, the play is pretty interesting with the two houses feuding, while Romeo and Juliet’s love blossoms after meeting at the ball. I mean after getting past the language, Shakespeare is definitely a wizard in the art of the “roast.” I wish our insults were more poetic in today’s society. Regardless, all the thumb-biting and salty remarks makes for some great entertainment. I have to hand it to Shakespeare for writing some hilariously sassy dialogue. This whole gang rivalry between the Montagues and the Capulets seems pretty ridiculous but I guess its pretty much the whole point of this story. My initial reactions to the play can be summed up into one sentence: these dudes are just begging for a fight. Ay, tis be the story of Romeo and Juliet. And all the serving men and nurses dealing with these crazy folks. Parents who think they know what’s best for their kids. Forbidden love between two hopelessly romantic kids. Saucy boys quarreling in the streets of fair Verona.
